New research from the Bank of Scotland has shown that house prices in Truro, Cornwall have risen by 121% since 2001, the second highest increase in UK cities after Inverness. The largest increase was in Scottish city Inverness, which was only declared a city in 2000 to mark the millennium. On average, property prices in Inverness were £68,141 in 2001 and increased to £169,257 in 2011, an increase of 148%.

House prices in England & Wales rose in August according to the latest figures by LSL property services. The monthly gain was helped by a raise in the prices of properties in London of 1.6%. Transactions on property also rose by 1.5%.

After a 3 year absence mortgages that cover the entire price of a home are making a return. 100% mortgages were withdrawn after lenders were criticised for being irresponsible when providing the loans, sometimes to people who couldn’t sustain the long term payments. The money lending company Aldermore has said that it will be the first bank to offer a deposit free mortgage deal since 2008. This is welcome news to first time house buyers who have previously been unable to buy a house due to the lack of initial investment capital.

The Office for National Statistics has revealed that one in seven couples between the ages of 50 and 64 own a second home. The official study is the first of its kind to look at couples in this age range. Many of the couples have landed on their feet by buying properties in the 1980s before the start of Britain’s property boom. In 1983 the price of an average home was £30,000 with a similar property attracting a price tag of £163,000 in today’s market.
